It is important to understand the function of the vacuum pump when designing or operating the vacuum system. We will review the working principles of the most common vacuum pumps and their use in the system. Over the next few months, we'll look at each of these pumps in more detail.
Pump type (according to work pressure)
The vacuum pump is classified according to the working pressure range, mainly divided into: main pump, booster pump or secondary pump. Within each pressure range, there are several types of pumps, each with different techniques, each with unique advantages in terms of pressure capacity, flow, cost and maintenance requirements.
Regardless of its design, the basic principle of operation is the same. The vacuum pump works by removing air and other gases from the vacuum chamber (or, if connected, from the outlet side of the higher vacuum pump). When the pressure in the chamber is reduced, removing other molecules becomes difficult to remove. Therefore, the industrial vacuum system (figure 1) must be able to operate within a particularly large pressure range, usually from 1 to 10-6. Applications in scientific research can be extended to 10-9 or lower. In order to achieve this, several different types of pumps are used in a typical system, each of which covers a part of the pressure range and is sometimes connected in series.
